Teacher Makes His Dreams Come True

Aliens among us? Blaine teacher signs book deal about ET's B&B

- THE BELLINGHAM HERALD

A hike through the woods can produce all sorts of lovely side effects: flushed cheeks, a sense of harmony with nature, an incomparable feeling of calm.

But for Clete Smith, the result of one particular hike was a lucrative book deal.

While wandering through the woods about two years ago, Smith developed the idea for a young-adult book, "Grandma's Intergalactic Bed & Breakfast." In it, a boy discovers his grandma operates a bed and breakfast for visiting aliens in a fictional town near Mount Baker.

Smith signed a deal Friday, June 5, with Hyperion Books, and movie rights were purchased by Disney, which owns Hyperion. He declined to comment on how much money the deal was for, only to say that it was much more than he makes as an English teacher at Blaine High School.

"It's surreal and wonderful, truly a dream come true," said Smith, 37, who lives in Bellingham. "It's always been my dream, since second grade, to be an author."

It took Smith about two years to get from wild idea to book deal, sneaking in an hour or two in the afternoons and dedicating his Sundays to writing, all while working toward his master's degree at Vermont College of Fine Arts. He credits support from his wife, Myra, and two young daughters for getting him through the rigorous rewrite process.

The book, roughly 200 pages, should be published in April 2011, with a sequel out in April 2012, though movie plans are up in the air. In addition to its release in English, the book is already set to be translated for sale in France and Brazil, an idea that's more than a little mind-blowing for Smith.

"I've lived in the Northwest all my life and wrote this little story that takes place up there," he said. "The thought of a kid in Brazil reading it in Portuguese is really surreal."

What thrills Smith the most is the idea of all kinds of kids sitting down and reading his book. It's aimed for children 8 to 11, the age when Smith really fell in love with reading. Smith's literary agent, George Nicholson, who works at Sterling Lord Literistic in New York City, thinks the book is full of fun, imagination and meaning - and potential for success.

"Here's a compact idea that is funny, it has a lot of vitality, the characters are fun. I think Clete has a real career as a writer," Nicholson said. "I've only met Clete once, and I liked him enormously. He's just a good guy, and that's what comes shining through in his book. I'm just thrilled to pieces about the whole thing."

Ultimately, Smith would love to be a full-time writer, focusing on writing children's books and perhaps traveling to schools to talk to kids. For now, though, he still relishes his role in the classroom, especially now that he can show the kids an example of how writing can lead to success.

"As an English teacher, it's fun to talk about the real-world applications of writing," he said. "It's fun to show them success."

Smith said he's got quite a few books stewing in his brain. With a sequel to "Grandma's Intergalactic Bed & Breakfast" in the works, Smith's imagination isn't going to get a rest any time soon, and he's thankful.

"Without a book deal, you're a 37-year-old guy sitting alone in a room thinking about aliens," he said. "This sort of legitimizes it."

QUADRIPLEGIC TEEN GIVES JENNA WOLFE A LESSON IN SURFING...AND COURAGE

by Melissa at 3/25/2009 4:12:00 AM

QUADRIPLEGIC TEEN GIVES JENNA WOLFE A LESSON IN SURFING...AND COURAGE

From Jenna Wolfe, TODAY SHOW

I went surfing with Patrick Ivison recently. Actually, he surfed… I just flailed around like a wild chicken barely balancing on a board. Patrick got a rush. I got a gallon of water in my mouth. Patrick wanted to spend the rest of the day in the water. I wanted to get out. So I grabbed my board and walked towards the beach. Patrick couldn’t follow me.

This wide-eyed, zealous 14-yr old is a quadriplegic.

Shortly after his first birthday, Patrick, who had been walking since he was nine months old, was with his mom, Jennifer, running errands when he wrangled away from her for just a second. In a twisted act of horrible timing, a car backed up and ran over the little boy, instantly crushing his spinal chord. Patrick was paralyzed from the neck down. His life, having just started, would change forever. Jennifer quit her job as a secretary to take care of Patrick, as it would clearly turn into a full time job. She now relies on fundraising to help pay for the intense rehab he undergoes.

Over the years, the two would develop a bond unlike any other. Patrick’s needs are lengthy. Jennifer, along with Patrick’s 12-year old sister (and best friend) Sam, help dress him, cook for him, transport him, bathe him, help him to school, to bed, to the bathroom. They are, for all intents and purposes, his mobility -- his legs, his arms, and up until recently, his hands.  But in return, Jennifer gets her son, and his incredible perspective on life. “Why pity myself?” he says. Patrick explained that if he weren’t in a wheelchair, he’d probably just be a “14-year old punk” getting into trouble.  Instead he’s out at the beach, counting the waves he's about to surf.

Patrick has grown up in a wheelchair and knows no other way to live. Each new goal of his requires far more willpower and manpower than it would for the rest of us. And he’s done a lot COMPARED to the rest of us --  waterskiing, rugby, soccer, basketball…he’s done it all. So he was determined to find a way to master surfing.

For years, he surfed the waves off the San Diego coast in his mind, envisioning the rush, the pull, the freedom of riding a board through the water. To hear him talk about it is to want to do anything in your power to make it happen. And then six years ago, Patrick finally found a way.  He met Jesse Billauer, a well-known surfer who also suffered a spinal chord injury.  Billauer had started a program called Life Rolls On, an organization which helps disabled people surf.

Episode 7:  Changing Keys

Billy McLaughlin and Director, Suzanne Jurva, were the guests on Episode 7 where they talked about their upcoming documentary, Changing Keys - Billy McLaughlin and the Mysteries of Dystonia.  This documentary follows Billy, five-time MN Music Award winning guitarist who began having unexplainable muscle spasms in his fretboard arm and hand at the height of his career. In 2001, Mayo Clinic confirmed McLaughlin's opponent - an incurable neuro-muscular disorder called focal dystonia. After years of countless therapies, McLaughlin was forced to give up his life's passion playing solo guitar and abruptly disappeared from sight of his national fan-base. Five years in the making, this documentary chronicles McLaughlin's unlikely attempt to re-claim his career by re-training himself to become a left-handed guitarist and delves into the scientific mysteries of dystonia. The film delivers a story about determination, persistence and personal triumph wrapped in the exquisite music of this innovative and newly left-handed guitarist.  For more information, visit www.billymacmusic.com.
