A Hot Air Balloon Ride to Succes

by Melissa at 5/29/2009 9:14:00 AM

Featured on: Story of My Life

The hot air balloon rose in the air as Melissa's knuckles tightened on the sides of the basket which alone held her from plummeting to the ground as she floated higher and higher into the sky. After the initial fear passed, the exhilaration of the moment filled her soul – keeping her coming back for more, higher, farther. From there, nothing was impossible.

Riding in a hot air balloon was one of many impressive goals Melissa would accomplish once she put her mind to it. Her family didn't have the money for extras when she was in college so she decided that she would find a way. She was already working full-time to pay for her classes when she began calling hot air balloon companies.

“Can I work for you on the weekends in exchange for a hot-air balloon ride?”
“No.”
“Do you need help on the weekends?”
“No, thank you.”
“I am willing to work for a hot air balloon ride.”
“Okay, fine.”

Finally, a yes! For a couple of hours on the weekend, Melissa achieved her heart's desire -- two rides in one summer. She had let herself dream, believed in herself and took the steps to accomplish it. Pictures and diary entries would fill her journal as each new goal was achieved. From learning to crochet to going to Australia, the ideas just kept exploding in her head. The amazing sense of accomplishment grew with each new skill or adventure.

Finishing college, Melissa would step out of the world of the weekend hot air ballooning and onto the corporate ladder. She reached her desired position as manager in sales and marketing at a magazine. She was excited but something didn't feel right. What she thought was going to be “it” just wasn't. She loved what she did but there was something else waiting for her full attention.

All her life, she had made goals, written them down, accomplished each dream one-by-one. Maybe now it was time to give back. She always she knew she was meant to help people. When she was growing up, she loved participating in different services that gave back to the community. Maybe she could give to others her strategy for success, goal setting and journaling the steps.

Wanting to educate, Melissa gave a seminar to 6th graders about goal setting and achievement. The session went so well that she could feel the “aha” moment – the connection with the kids, their response and desire to learn, her desire to give the gift of what she knew could work. She loved speaking in schools. This was “it!” The light bulbs were going off. Her calling and life purpose finally became clear but it would be a couple of years before she would go out on her own.

“All her life, she had made goals, written them down, accomplished each dream one-by-one. Maybe now it was time to give back.”

Sharing with the students from her own childhood, Melissa would tell the story about watching her own father as he trained to run a marathon. Following his dream, she remembers going to the races and cheering him on. Sometimes they would participate in a family fun run and it was great to be a part of seeing him have a dream and work towards it. Later her parents decided to learn a new language. Again, she witnessed them setting goals and accomplishing them. The process of learning and growing stuck with her and she took it to the next level.

To the kids, she says, “You can do what you put your mind to. Some dreams can come true. You can apply yourself and make good grades. You can figure out a way to become a doctor, a veterinarian, a baseball player. . .You can do it by setting a goal, writing it down and taking the action steps to get here. If you are creative and willing to work for it; there is hope.”

Each grade Melissa works with has a different set of challenges. Seniors are career focused and know how to set goals. Fourth graders are still thinking about being a ninja or a superhero. But whatever outrageous thing they might be thinking, Melissa tells them it is okay to dream and figure out how to turn one's passion into a career some day. At the younger ages, goal planning skills come in handy for good grades and all aspects of their future life if they can see achievement now.

To adults, she asks “What do you want to do? What dreams do you want to accomplish that you haven't already?” Dream List Photo Journals have become a way Melissa can share with her audience the need to write down goals, make baby steps and achieve them one by one until the larger picture is achieved. Developing the final product took time but the journals have become an essential element of Melissa's presentation as she guides individuals in their own path towards success, large to small.

Stepping off the safe corporate ladder and into the lofty skies of entrepreneurship and risk, Melissa has big plans to take her workshops into schools nationwide, helping counselors and teachers work with students, one individual -- one dream at a time.

by Melissa at 3/3/2009 9:08:00 AM

I can’t believe I actually did this, but I created my first YouTube video of me singing in the bathroom for the Ellen DeGeneres Show Bathroom Concert Series contest.  I’m a big dork but I really really want to get on the show.  It’s on my dream list.  Hopefully I don’t regret this!

I need your help to get on the show!  Watch my video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vB57TlvgsYI and make a comment (don’t be too mean b/c I’m not a great singer). Then pass it to as many people as you can.  I need to get a bunch of people to watch the video to help me possibly win.

Thanks a million!!!

Don’t be afraid to dream big

Melissa Borghorst aims to inspire the world to follow their dreams and celebrate their accomplishments.

The local woman, who was raised in Woodinville and now lives in Bellingham, is founder of Dream List Media and creator of “Dream List Journals.” Her work takes her to schools across the Northwest, where she gives workshops for children to teach them goal-planning skills and empower them to achieve their dreams.

“I strive to inspire kids to go after their dreams, big or small, and make them reality,” explains Borghorst. “The key to doing this lies in the ability to set clearly defined goals that are then broken down into smaller, manageable steps. It’s a process that kids can take with them and use in many different facets of their lives.”

As a young girl, Borghorst remembers making lists of activities she wanted to do, like kayaking and riding a horse on a beach, and places she wanted to visit, such as Alki Beach and the San Juan Islands. And each time she accomplished something on her list, she crossed it off with a sense of pride and satisfaction. Then in college, she received the gift of a journal, which she began using to formally keep track of her goals and accomplishments.

“The journal triggered something for me,” comments Borghorst. “It was the perfect place to write down my dreams and then document them with photos and brief descriptions when they came true. And then I had this great record of everything I had done.”

Over the years, Borghorst has filled up several journals and has seen many of her dreams come to fruition. She pet a kangaroo in Australia, climbed the Eiffel Tower in Paris, snorkeled, rode in a gondola in Venice, visited Hawaii, went sky diving and more.

Her list of dreams is always growing, as she is constantly thinking of all that she wants to do in her life. “I have so many things I want to experience and places I want to visit, as well as work that I’d like to accomplish,” says Borghorst. One of her goals has been to create Dream List Media, which she finally did last year, after leaving her job in the corporate world.

The Woodinville native realized she wanted to share her ideas with others, especially children, and encourage them to pursue their dreams.  “I had been practicing what I preached for years,” she comments. “It just felt so right to go in this direction. My heart was in creating this business, so I went ahead and made a plan to make it happen. And it’s happening. And it’s very exciting!”

During a recent workshop at East Ridge Elementary School in Woodinville, Borghorst spoke with the sixth grade classes about their hopes and dreams. She first shared her own personal experiences and successes with the students and then directed them to create personalized Dream Journals in which they listed their dreams for the future: for a career, for fun and for others and the world.

Afterward, they each chose one dream they wanted to begin working on this year and proceeded to construct a dream tree that outlined the specific steps to achieve their goal. The room buzzed with excitement, as kids talked with their tablemates about their ideas and plans, which included everything from piloting a plane and living in Paris to being a rock star and owning a water park.

One child expressed his desire to be a missionary in a poor country, while another talked about buying malaria nets to help the people in Africa.
Mariah Swayne, 11, spoke of becoming an actress one day and she meticulously noted the steps she needed to take to succeed in her endeavor, including enrolling in acting classes, auditioning for school plays, doing a job shadow of a professional actor, going to different theaters and researching colleges with good drama schools. “It’s good for me to think of these things now,” she commented. “That way I can start planning everything I need to do to make it happen.”

Henry Coba, 12, wants to play basketball in college. He said, “Doing the dream tree made me realize that there are actually a lot of steps involved in making my dream come true. Now I can see what I have to do.”

And Julia Schoen, 12, who plans to be an artist, added, “This is really useful for me because I can look at it and check how I’m doing from time to time.”
Throughout the year, the children will be encouraged to use their Dream Journals to record their progress and any accomplished goals, using photos, drawings, clippings and written entries.

Borghorst also discussed the element of finances with the kids and pointed out that many dreams will require money to achieve. She told them that there are creative ways to approach this problem and illustrated one possible solution by telling them her hot air balloon story.  “I use this story because I think it gets students to think outside the box when it comes to money,” explains Borghorst. “I wanted to go for a hot air balloon ride when I was in high school, but I didn’t have the money and my parents weren’t just going to give it to me. It was expensive. The summer after I graduated, I decided to see if one of the local hot air balloon companies would let me go for a ride in exchange for doing some work for them. After calling several places and getting ‘no’ to my requests, I finally found one who took me up on my offer. And that summer, I got to go up in a balloon twice.”

Borghorst emphasizes that dream fulfillment can take time, patience and perseverance. She also assures kids that their dreams will change and they may lose interest in a specific goal, but that’s okay. “Just don’t give up if it’s something that is really important to you,” she adds. “Don’t dismiss it because you think it’s going to be too hard or take too long to accomplish. Don’t be afraid to dream big.”

Candy Collyer, East Ridge sixth grade teacher, views Borghorst’s workshops as instrumental in helping students set short and long term goals, evaluate themselves and prepare for their future. She says, “These are all skills that speak to the district’s standards. Melissa’s presentations really connect to the curriculum and the tools she gives the kids will help them establish good habits that will serve them in the years to come.”

For Borghorst, the reward is in the ability to touch children’s lives and influence them in a positive manner. She adds, “My heart feels fulfilled when I do this work. I believe that helping others in this way is my calling.”

Help your dreams come true

By SARAH ARNEY
Arlington Times News Editor

Dec 03 2008, 5:00 AM

MARYSVILLE — It’s her version of a bucket list, but basically the same idea, said Melissa Borghorst, who believes Walt Disney when he said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

A resident of Bellingham, Borghorst will lead a mini-workshop, “What’s on Your Dream List?” at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 at The BookWorks, 1510 Third St. in Marysville. She wants to inspire Marysville residents and neighbors to do what they need to do to make their dreams come true.

“I believe that writing down your dreams helps a lot in making them come true,” Borghorst said. “I’ve had a dream list for years,” she said. She creates journals specially for that purpose. “Nothing exhilarates the soul more than accomplishing your hopes, your dreams, and your heart’s desire,” Borghorst said.

She will guide visitors to BookWorks bookstore through the steps from her new Dream List Photo Journal series. “You’ll walk away inspired and enthused, with your own dream list in hand,” she said.

Borghorst is on a mission to inspire people around the world to follow their dreams and celebrate their accomplishments. She sends this message through her Dream List Photo Journals and motivational workshops.

For further information, please email info@dreamlistmedia.com, call 360-676-6718, or visit www.dreamlistmedia.com.

This is the author’s first time to visit BookWorks, although she is familiar with Marysville. “Marysville is the place I’ve often stopped on my journey to and from visiting family in Seattle. The workshop is directed toward teens and up. The workshop should appeal to college students as well people planning their retirement.
